London,  SE25 6AE Map

Bring Along Baby returns to SE25!

We are pleased to be able to relaunch our popular parent and baby strand in a brand new venue – the Harris Academy South Norwood.

Come and discover quality independent cinema, without having to find a babysitter! Just bring your baby and indulge in a movie with other mums and dads, with appropriate sound levels, baby changing areas and plenty of space for prams and buggies.

Please note: These screenings are exclusively for parents or carers with babies up to the age of 12 months. Adults without babies, and children over the age of one year, are not permitted to attend Bring Along Baby screenings.

____

Director: Theodore Melfi. USA 2016. 127 mins

Hidden Figures tells the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) – the brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. A stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanised the world.

As well as helping launch John into orbit, the brilliant women crossed gender and race lines, defied expectations and battled stereotypes. In the process, they inspired generations of people to aim high and dream big.

With a star-studded cast, powerful performances and an infectious toe-tapping soundtrack by Pharrell Williams, Hidden Figures is a celebration of achievement, where only the sky’s the limit!

Jazz Jamaica

Jazz Jamaica

Aug 5, 9:00pm - Aug 5, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Bassist and bandleader Gary Crosby brings Jazz Jamaica back to Hideaway mixing up jazz and ska classics, bringing in some reggae vibes and performing with a swing and zeal that has made them festival favourites around the world, Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as 'one of the UK's leading good-time bands' (The Independent).

“Jazz Jamaica should be permanent ambassadors to the United Nations of Good Times.” Cheltenham International Jazz Festival.

In 1991, inspired by the rhythms of traditional Jamaican music and the largely improvisational nature of jazz, original Jazz Warrior and veteran jazz double bassist, Gary Crosby, turned a musical concept into a joyful reality. Crosby's concept was to create a quintessential fusion of mento, ska, reggae and jazz, playing classic and modern jazz standards alongside Jamaican folksongs. The result was Jazz Jamaica.

Since its realisation, Crosby has developed the Jazz Jamaica concept by introducing a stream of talented young jazz musicians, so increasing the size of the pool of Jazz Jamaicans, and enabling him to push the boundaries of the music played. Collectively, Crosby and his musicians represent the finest exponents of this unique musical fusion known as skazz, a fusion loved and appreciated by everyone, of all ages and colours around the globe. In 2002, Jazz Jamaica All Stars were winners of the BBC Radio Jazz Award for Best Band.

Crosby’s leadership and drive continue to ensure the evolution of Jazz Jamaica – a process that is encapsulated by the recent headline grabbing collaborative project “Catch A Fire” that saw the band join a 240 voice choir, the Urban Soul Orchestra and Brinsley Forde (Aswad) in a celebration of the music of Bob Marley at the Royal Festival Hall this Summer.

Line up: Gary Crosby - Upright Bass/Leader, Zara MacFarlane – Vocals, Camilla George - Alto Sax, Denys Baptiste - Tenor Sax, Byron Wallen - Trumpet, Harry Brown - Trombone, Ben Burrell - Piano/Organ, Robin Banagee - Guitar, Pete Eckford - Percussion, Eddie Hick - Drums, & Special Guests

Mark Pontin is a genuine triple threat. If he were solely a singer the new album from The Mark Pontin Group would stand head and shoulders above the pack on that strength alone. His effortless vocals can turn on a dime from gritty and raw to smooth and melodic, displaying enviable range without the strain and the kind of control and dynamics rarely seen in a blues/rock context. His abilities as a guitarist easily put him in the upper echelons of blues and rock players, in the UK or anywhere else for that matter. His beautifully nuanced playing, musicianly without over-indulgence, at times wrangles massive sounds from a Marshall amp, at others coaxes delicate harmonics from an acoustic guitar. As a songwriter, Mark displays the kind of versatility rarely seen within the often predictably rigid confines of the blues/rock scene and demonstrates how easily - when you know how - the genre can incorporate shades of jazz, funk, soul and pop music.

In the short period since the release of their succesful 2013 debut Days Of Destiny, The Mark Pontin Group established themselves firmly on the UK Blues/Rock scene. With rave reviews the album acheived extensive airplay all around the world. Recognition then followed from the network of Blues/Rock DJ's and reviewers who nominated the band in 5 categories at the 2014 British Blues Awards. Finalists in the 'Guitarist', 'Bassist', and 'Album Of The Year' categories, the band reached the final 6 in 'Blues Song' and 'Emerging Artist' categories.

The Mark Pontin Group are never happier than when they are on the live stage utilising not only their remarkable individual talents but also great interplay and improvisation, with no two shows ever being the same. On the flourishing UK live circuit, the Swansea based band continue to make an impression, having backed established acts such as Royal Southern Brotherhood and Walter Trout, who was heard to exclaim ' What A Kickin' Band! '. Obvious comparisons could be made to Cream or Hendrix though it could be said that MPGs abilities range further still, incorporating a rich variety of flavours into their own secret formula, the band bring the genre into the 21st century, with radio friendly tunes, and a huge onstage sound.

Now, with their new album Textures, it is clear that the bar for contemporary blues/rock has been raised and The Mark Pontin Group - Mark Pontin (Guitar/Vocals), Callum Morgan Jones (Bass/Backing Vocals), Dafydd Davies (Drums/Backing Vocals) - is a force to be reckoned with.

Rockers (15) | Celebrate Jamaica

Aug 9, 8:00pm - Aug 9, 11:00pm

South Norwood Conservative Club
10 South Norwood Hill
South Norwood,  SE25 6AB Map

Celebrate Jamaican Independence Day with a sizzling cult classic that captures the unforgettable 70s reggae era so beautifully.

Making it in the music business in Kingston, Jamaica, is hard, and nobody knows it better than regularly unemployed drummer Horsemouth (Leroy Wallace). Although talented, he earns precious little for his music and is obliged to try hustling vinyl records on the side. It's a lousy gig, but Horsemouth takes his lumps amiably, until some brash members of the local Mafia steal his motorbike. Determined to get it back, he and his friends concoct a daring scheme.

Showcasing the rich culture and characters of Jamaica with genuine authenticity, Theodoros Bafaloukos' 1978 feature is a perfect summer film to celebrate the Caribbean isle’s history, music and independence!

Why not arrive early for a taste of the Caribbean? Our friends at Perfect Taste will be in the bar from 7pm, serving up their delicious cuisine!

The sounds of the hottest Stax and Atlantic soul inspired songs from REUBEN JAMES RICHARDS and an all-star band with guest vocalist soul jazz singer Rouhangeze Baichoo. A top night of gospel-tinged blues, soul & R'n'B is guaranteed as Reuben's dazzling voice evokes memories of Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding!

Soul Jazz singer Rouhangeze Baichoo will be backing vocalist and dueting for one special song with Reuben James Richards.

From it’s inception to completion, the recording of Reuben James Richards debut album ‘About Time’ took almost twenty years, but it seem that soul fans think the wait worthwhile with the late legendary producer, Jerry Wexler (Atlantic), describing Reuben as possessing one of the greatest voices he had heard in a decade.

“I’m so glad this album has seen the light of day, I’ve been playing this a lot” Craig Charles, BBC Radio2

“The influence of Ray Charles and Otis Redding oozes from every note on a warmly authentic set of gospel-tinged blues, soul & R’n’B songs” Uncut Magazine

One of England’s most distinctive vocalists, guitarists and songwriters in contemporary blues music today. Couple that with a band that features Roger Inniss on bass, Wayne Proctor on drums and Bob Fridzema on keys and you have one dynamite night!

Drawn to the Blues music his parents introduced him to (artists such as Muddy Waters, Son House, Eric Clapton and Albert King) It became obvious his ambition as a 14 year old was to become a great Artist like his heroes.

Early in his career he co-founded East Midlands based Blues band The Melt aged 16. During the three years of touring and opening for such acts as: Walter Trout, Mountain, Doctor Feelgood and The Animals the band released there critically acclaimed “self titled” album. Voted “debut album of the year by Blues In Britain magazine” Showing Ash at the age of 17 was already a gifted guitarist, vocalist and songwriter.

Ash in his early 20’s decided to join “DJUNE, featuring his Brother Phil Wilson (Laurence Jones, Scott Mckeon, Sean Webster) on drums, Greg Smith (Sean Webster) on the Bass and Robert Patchett on Guitar. After further crafting rare and distinctive songwriting, guitar and singing skills he wrote and recorded tracks featured in films by “Wavelength” Europe’s biggest surfing magazine. These opportunities led to Djune performing with Ocean Colour Scene, The Kooks and Pigeon Detectives.

After a break Ash returned to being a live performer with alternative rock band Infamous Vampires. Co-founded with his brother Phil Wilson the band was created as a canvas for them to indulge in a darker setting and delve into a more complex place both lyrically and musically. The self titled album was released in May of 2014. Although the project was not a serious outfit it did see the start of Ash’s writing relationship with his brother Phil.

In 2014 he became a full time member of the Sean Webster Band. Being a part of Sean’s band Ash, working both as a rhythm and lead player, transformed Sean’s live set and the well received album “See it through”

In 2016 Ash was asked to join Jesse Davey's Big Blues Band, co-writing and singing the song “The Revalator" from the “Big Blues Album” Which came 3rd in the 2016 “Best Album" category. The album also featured blues greats Hugh Coltman, Ian Siegal, Pete Gage, Scott Mckeon, Sam Bratley, Phil Wilson and Mark Barret.
With all this outside activity Ash has never written a solo album. But while honing his skills as a guitarist, songwriter and singer, he stockpiled ideas and songs he'd written for himself as well for Sean Webster, The Melt and Jesse Davey. He selected songs and co-written songs with his brother for his Debut solo album Broken Machine.

Since 2015 in the year following his daughters birth Ash’s influences of life journeys and reflections manifest themselves in Broken Machine’s message and soul.

The release of Ash's debut album featuring Phil Wilson on drums (Jesse Davey, Laurence Jones), Roger Inniss on Bass (Chaka Khan, Laurence Jones) and Bob Fridzema on Keys (KING KING, Dana Fuchs) Also appearing on Broken Machine is Jesse Davey (The Hoax) on the song "The Hitcher”, is a watershed achievement for Ash Wilson both in terms of the many musical styles in the tracks, which begin and end with the blues at its core, with the explorations and growth of him as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. Resulting in the spiritual growth expressed through the medium of his music.

Director: Park Chan-wook. South Korea 2016. 154 mins

From the mind of Park Chan-wook, the director of the unforgettable cult-classic Oldboy, comes his latest mysterious psychodrama.

Set in 1930s South Korea and Japan, the story revolves around four people: a noble lady who has inherited a fortune, a swindler count who is after the noble lady’s fortune, a young female pickpocket hired by the swindler count and the noble lady’s uncle who is her guardian.

Inspired by Sarah Waters’s 2002 crime novel Fingersmith, set in Victorian Era Britain, The Handmaiden is a playfully provocative tale dripping with seduction, desire and deceit. This is your chance to see the film that made it into over thirty top-10 lists by film critics worldwide, from a director and writer still at the very top of his game.
